Getting started
Is Bible First free?
Yes. Bible First is free to download and use. There are no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and no ads, and every study is available to everyone.
Do I need an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for. What you write and mark is kept on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud so it stays in step across your devices.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone and iPad, on iOS 17 or later.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. All 224 studies and their Scripture are inside the app, so reading, searching and writing all work offline. A connection is only used by iCloud, to keep your devices in step.
Studying
How is the app organised?
There are sixteen pathways on the Home tab, such as Jesus' Parables, The Psalms and Names of God. Each holds between ten and twenty-one studies, 224 in all.
Tap a pathway to see a short introduction and its studies laid out as a route. The ones you have read are ticked, and You are here marks the next one. The gold button at the top continues from that study.
What is in a study?
Each study has a summary, the Scripture passage, a reflection on it, reflection questions, and a closing prayer. Below those are your own notes, the themes the study touches, and related studies.
When does a study count as read?
When you reach the end of the study itself, which is its closing prayer. Opening a study and leaving does not mark it read.
If you leave partway through, Home offers it back to you as Continue reading and it reopens where you stopped.
What is the card at the top of Home?
It is the next step for you: the study you left unfinished, or else the next unread study in the pathway you read from last, labelled Up next.
What happens when I finish a pathway?
At the end of the last study you will see Pathway complete. Tap it for a summary: the studies you read, the themes the pathway returned to most, your highlights, and every answer and note you wrote, each beside its question or verse. The summary stays available from the pathway's page.
How do themes and related studies work?
At the end of every study are the themes it touches, such as Grace or Fear & Anxiety, and four related studies from any pathway.
Tap a theme to see every study on it, grouped by pathway. You can also browse all sixty themes from the Search tab before typing anything.
Highlights, notes and answers
How do I highlight a verse?
Tap the verse and choose Highlight. To remove it, tap the verse again and choose Remove Highlight.
How do I write a note on a verse?
Tap the verse and choose Write a Note. The note stays with that verse: inside its card, or directly beneath the passage under its reference.
To change or remove it, tap the verse or the note again and choose Edit Note. The editor has a Delete note button.
How do I answer a reflection question?
Tap the question, write your answer and tap Save. The answer stays beneath its question. Tap it again to edit or delete it.
Can I write a note about a whole study?
Yes. Under My Notes in any study, tap Add note. Tap a note to edit it, or press and hold it to delete it.
Where do I find everything I have written?
Open the Settings tab and tap Highlights & Notes. Your highlights, notes and answers are listed together, newest first, each with the verse or question it belongs to. Use the buttons at the top to show one kind, and tap any row to open its study.
Search and favorites
How do I search?
Tap the Search tab and start typing. Results come from every study, its Scripture, and your own notes and answers, and each shows the line that matched.
How do I save a study to Favorites?
While reading a study, tap the heart at the top right. Tap it again to remove it. Your saved studies are on the Favorites tab.
Prayer
How do I add a prayer?
Open the Prayer tab and tap +. Write your prayer, choose any tags that fit, and tap Save.
How do I keep track of my prayers?
Tap Pray on a prayer each time you pray for it. When it has been answered, tap Answered ✓; it moves to the Answered list, where you can look back on it or restore it.
Can I edit or delete a prayer?
Tap a prayer to edit it. Press and hold it and choose Delete Prayer to remove it.
Reminders and settings
How do I turn on a daily reminder?
In Settings, under Daily Reminder, turn on Remind me to read and pick a time. iOS will ask once for permission to send notifications.
What is the prayer nudge?
Nudge me about quiet prayers sends one reminder on a Sunday when something on your prayer list has not been prayed for in two weeks. It never includes a name or the words of a prayer.
My reminders are not arriving.
Notifications are probably turned off for the app. Open the iPhone's Settings, then Notifications, then Bible First, and allow them. The app's own Settings screen shows a warning when this is the cause.
Can I change the text size or use dark mode?
Yes, both are in Settings. Appearance can be Light, Dark or Auto, which follows your device. Text Size can follow your device's setting or be one of five sizes.
Where are my reading stats and milestones?
In Settings, tap Reading Stats for your streak, the studies you have read, and your milestones.
Sync and privacy
How does syncing work?
If your device is signed in to iCloud, your favorites, highlights, notes, answers, prayers and reading progress sync through your own private iCloud to your other devices. Settings shows the current status under iCloud Sync.
The place you stopped in an unfinished study is kept on each device and does not sync.
Who can see my notes and prayers?
Only you. They are stored on your device and in your own private iCloud, which we cannot read. The app has no account system, no analytics and no advertising, and makes no network requests of its own. See the Privacy Policy for the detail.
I do not see something I wrote on my other device.
Check that both devices are signed in to the same iCloud account, are online, and have Bible First updated to the latest version. Newer kinds of writing, such as answers and verse notes, only appear on a device once it has the version that introduced them.
Troubleshooting
My favorites, notes or prayers disappeared.
Your data lives on your device and in your iCloud, and survives app updates. If the app was deleted while iCloud was off for it, data that was only on that device is lost.
If something went missing unexpectedly, please write to us so we can look into it.
The app shows a warning that it is not saving.
This means the app could not open its library on this device and is running from temporary memory. Anything added now would be lost when it closes. Restarting your iPhone or iPad usually clears it.
How do I report a problem or suggest something?
In the app, open Settings and tap Send Feedback. Choose Suggestion, Problem or Question and write your message. It is sent as an email from your own account, with your app version, iOS version and device model added for you.
You can also write to levihopper+biblefirst@gmail.com. If you do, please say which iPhone or iPad you have, your iOS version, and what happened.
